Our story
We built the thing we kept wishing existed.
Ember Locate started with a group chat: four friends comparing the ways they got home safely — shared live locations, fake phone calls, keys between knuckles. All of it improvised, none of it designed.
Why we built this
In 2023 one of our founders found an AirTag in the lining of her tote bag. She had no idea how long it had been there, and no clear next step. The tools available were either buried in a phone's settings or shaped like something you'd be embarrassed to take out at a bar.
We spent the following eighteen months with hardware engineers, security researchers and safety advocates working out what a genuinely useful everyday device looks like. The answer was small, quiet, beautiful — and ruthlessly good at two jobs.
Today Ember Locate devices are carried by more than 40,000 people across 14 countries. Every alert our system has delivered has included coordinates, a What3Words address, and a clear instruction for contacts to involve law enforcement.

Annual third-party penetration testing of our app, firmware and alert infrastructure.
